Integrating Natural Wellness Tools Into Your Animal Practice

How natural modalities, targeted nutrition, supplementation, and a whole-animal perspective can work together

If you're an animal wellness professional, chances are you already have tools you trust. Maybe your work centers around bodywork, Reiki, animal communication, nutrition, essential oils, herbs, rehabilitation, training, or another form of natural wellness. Animals rarely arrive with just one thing going on, however. A mobility problem may have you thinking about joints and connective tissue, but what about circulation, inflammation, hydration, nutrition, toxicity, or the nervous system? An anxious animal may respond beautifully to energy work, sound, or calming touch, while something happening physically or environmentally may also be contributing to what you're seeing.

That's where integration becomes so valuable. For me, integrative animal wellness means learning to observe the whole animal, understanding what may be interfering with balance, and knowing which of the tools available to you may provide support.

My Own Animal Wellness Practice Grew Through Integration

My journey became intensely personal in 2006 when my dog Ginger was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma. I didn't have any protocols and doctors provided no hope, and no answers. I had a dog I loved, a biology background, and virtually no healing skills (yet). However, I had access to some remarkable people and products, and an enormous willingness to learn. I followed the advice of my mentor and friend, an intuitive healer with vast experience in the natural wellness business. She inspired me to tune-in to my observations as well as my feelings about working with animals, especially Ginger.

Ginger was also the first member of my family to begin using the zeolite product I had discovered through biochemist Rik Deitsch. At the time, we didn't know where that discovery would eventually lead. Avini Health didn't exist yet. I certainly wasn't thinking about building an animal wellness practice around these ideas. I was looking for ways to support a dog I loved.

That experience eventually led me much deeper into natural wellness for animals and to becoming certified in Animal Naturopathy. The training expanded the way I understood nutrition, natural health, prevention, environmental influences, and the relationships among the many systems affecting an animal's wellbeing. It also fit naturally with the biology, Reiki, energy healing, and other integrative approaches I was already using.

Think in Systems, Not Just Symptoms

This is where working integratively gets interesting. An animal's body is constantly managing relationships among the digestive system, immune system, nervous system, circulation, connective tissue, cellular energy, detoxification pathways, and much more. When you understand those relationships, you can begin asking better questions.

Rather than only asking, What can I use for this symptom? you may also ask what could be interfering with this animal's ability to maintain or restore balance. Is there an environmental burden? Does nutrition need support? Is hydration adequate? Could circulation be improved? Does the nervous system need help settling? Is movement limited? Are there foundational nutritional needs that aren't being met? Is toxicity an issue?

Now the individual modalities have context. Reiki can support one part of the picture. Sound can bring another kind of information and vibration into the session. Bodywork can affect movement and circulation. Essential oils and plant-based approaches offer another layer. Nutrition, detoxification, and targeted supplementation can support the physical systems we're asking to do the work. They rarely compete, and blend beautifully together.

What Could Integration Add to Your Animal Practice?

If you're already working professionally with animals, build on it. Learn more about the physical systems underneath what you're observing. Explore tools that complement the work you already do. Understand nutrition and environmental burden. Learn when another modality may be useful, and develop relationships with other professionals whose skills complement yours.

If you're a practitioner who believes in integration, the products and supplements you recommend can also create another dimension to your business. If clients are already asking what you use, what you recommend, or where they can find a product you've discussed with them, there may be a natural relationship between the wellness work you provide and the products you choose to share.

That's a conversation I'm particularly interested in having with animal wellness professionals. My own path has included biology, certification in Animal Naturopathy, Reiki and energy healing, sound, essential oils, targeted nutrition, years of working with people and their animals, and eventually the business side of sharing products I believe belong in the conversation.

After nearly two decades of exploring natural wellness with animals, I still don't think the most interesting question is Which modality is best? I think the better question is:

What can we accomplish when the right tools work together?
