I’m a Nerd and the Art of Selective Selling

A Wellness Business Worth Sharing

Give me an interesting technology, a biological question, a scientific study, or an ingredient label and I'll probably want to know more. I enjoy understanding how things work, and I especially enjoy taking complicated ideas and making them understandable. That's what makes what I do selective. When understanding what goes INTO a product means the difference between feeling better or compromising health, it all matters. So, yes, I'm a nerd about health and healing, and I have a wellness business.

I'm a nerd about biology. I'm fascinated by sound and vibration, nutrition, energy medicine, animals, plants, and all kinds of technologies that have the potential to make our lives better.

That doesn't mean I want to sell all of them. In fact, something rather funny has been happening at the club where I work out.

Apparently, I Sell Massage Oil

I make a massage oil that I use on my own feet after working out. I started with a combination of carrier oils and essential oils, including lemongrass. One day, a friend in the locker room noticed me using it and became curious because it smelled so good! She tried it. "I'll take two bottles!"

I smiled and explained that I didn't sell massage oil. I was perfectly happy to show her how to make it herself. However, she just wanted me to make it for her. She was particularly interested in supporting circulation and healthy feet, so I customized her blend with lemongrass, cypress, and rose geranium essential oils in a nourishing carrier-oil base. I made her two bottles.

Then she wanted more. At this point, she's purchased eight bottles from me, and the lovely smell and idea of massage oil for circulation caught the attention of another friend in the locker room. She wants a bottle, too. Apparently, telling someone I don't sell massage oil hasn't been a particularly effective sales strategy.

I may have accidentally created a tiny massage-oil business. And yet, I have absolutely no desire to become the Massage Oil Lady. I enjoy making it. I understand the ingredients. I can explain why I chose them. I'm happy that my friend enjoys using it. And if someone asks me to make another bottle, I probably will. It's simply not what I want to build, but because I love essential oils and helping people, I'll gladly create a custom order. I actually also make smaller bottles for dog aromatherapy. It's a thing, and I love what the oils can do.

Easy to Sell?

I'm aware of business people looking for something that's easy to sell. Evaluate the company, Get into business. Make a fast, easy income. I've seen it before, but that's not necessarily for me. My massage oil appears to be easy to sell, even when I'm not trying. People experience it, like it, and ask me for it. That's about as easy as selling gets.

After what feels like a lifetime exploring natural wellness, I've encountered an extraordinary number of fascinating ideas, products, modalities, and technologies. I've used and studied magnets, living water, nutrition, supplements, essential oils, Reiki, sound healing, and animal wellness. I can get wonderfully nerdy about all of them. I've turned my wellness expertise into an integrative business, combining science and natural healing methods.

Each discovery adds something to my understanding. Discernment helps me decide what deserves my time and attention, and even more importantly, if it's worth sharing and talking about. I selectively choose which products to recommend.

When Passion Makes Knowledge Visible

Years ago my passion for wellness became even more personal. In an attempt to help a family member with her deadly diagnosis, I searched across all media and communities available to me at the time. I knew I didn't have enough. That's what nerdiness will do. You know enough to realize how much you don't know. Then two important connections were made that gave me answers (that's another story for another time.) Let's just say my nerdiness took over. I remember driving to a meeting for one company's products while being on the phone with the new ideas, experiences, and science of what would become my passion for health and healing.

It wasn't an obvious division of my resources but rather an integration of what I knew from my years as a biologist and seeker-of-good-ideas. The technology and science of the first company sparked my curiosity enough to know what I couldn't put into words. The testimonies of the second company brought to light the wisdom that the body really can heal itself.

That might sound like an easy sale. Remove interference and allow the body to heal, perhaps even from the state of hopelessness. It makes sense, and it's almost unbelievable unless you know what this nerd discovered.

So Why Build a Business Around One Thing?

I think I've answered that question. But if it's not obvious, I'll step up and get a little louder. That's how I feel about my discoveries in natural healing. I wish I knew when my mother was ill and she asked the question I didn't have an answer to back then. I wish I had the healing skills and knowledge to help her. She wanted to know if the liver could regenerate. I honestly didn't know. She was hopeful enough to think it might be possible. I was smart enough to know that I didn't know. But the underlying drive was that nerdiness to always search for the one thing that could make a difference for everyone, if THEY only knew.

I've built my wellness business around discovery, the find, and a terrific solution nobody knows about. Call it selective. Not every product makes a mark, but the right one surely does. Connection matters. Knowledge matters. Passion matters, and I even believe the origin and company matter. Network marketing has made its mark on me as a successful method for learning, sharing, and making a difference. I believe I have all of it in my hands, along with more than 20 years in the making. I may not have all the answers yet, but when I find the right people who are maybe a little nerdy like me, a little passionate, creative, inspired, and driven to make a difference in the world through helping people, those are the folks I want to have a conversation with.

Could you choose something worth building around? Could you also be curious, caring, and selective about your devotion and passion to natural wellness? That's when sharing begins to feel very different from selling. Maybe that's why my little massage-oil enterprise makes me smile.

It's easy to sell. I enjoy making it. People apparently want it.

The fun begins when you discover what business you genuinely want to build, and which products you've selected to understand more deeply. I'd love to have a little fun, nerding out with you over scientific studies, ingredients, and more importantly, the stories people tell when they actually live to tell their stories.
