If you're like me, you've had your struggles with weight throughout the years. I was a chubby child, even though I loved dance and ballet. That alone helped me to learn posture and poise, and more than a little about how to feel good in my body. But it wasn't enough to get ahead of the challenges that followed me the rest of my life, especially about losing weight. You might look at me and say weight isn't a problem for me. However, even a little extra around the middle compromises my overall health. How can just a little extra weight hurt you?

When you carry even as little as 10 extra pounds, you are more susceptible to joint pain, low energy, and problems sleeping. But there's a greater threat - a potential to gain even more weight. Here's where I see how I've failed in the past. A little weight added is tolerated. In fact, it's almost accepted as a "normal" result of aging, but the truth is a compounding issue of multiple factors, like slower metabolism, consuming more calories than you burn, and even where you tend to accumulate body fat! Visceral fat, which is fat padding in the abdominal cavity and around organs, is much more dangerous than fat just under the skin (subcutaneous fat.) It's usually visible around the waist and can be felt more obviously in how comfortable your clothes fit. Are you having to loosen your belt or buy new clothes in a larger size?

High visceral fat is linked to increased risk of heart disease, high blood sugar, and elevated blood pressure and cholesterol. These risks don't go away without losing the fat. Even popular weight loss/blood sugar/cholesterol medical solutions increase your risk for harmful side effects. Muscle depreciation in the gut, heart, and everywhere there's muscle seems to be more common, if you read the warning labels. People get comfortable with being uncomfortable - a nice way to say they tolerate and adjust to their pain and misery. It's a defense mechanism that helps temporarily, until symptoms become intolerable.

Though diet and exercise are important, faster results build confidence and let you know you're going in the right direction.
