Stress. The more people I meet, the more I realize that not everyone has the tools they need to process stress in their daily lives. Why is processing stress important? To process stress involves releasing it, transforming persistent negative energies into positive change. Though not all stress can be processed, we would like to encourage you to try.
How to Process Stress
1. Acknowledge Stress
The first step may be to acknowledge that you do have stress in your life and that experiencing stress may not be in your best interest. Some people thrive on stress, feeling motivated to accomplish great tasks. Physically, stress causes many biological changes in your metabolism and body tissues. Your adrenal glands produce the stress hormone, adrenaline. Adrenaline is a wonderful adaptation that allows us extra strength and endurance in stressful times. However, in today’s world we often find ourselves in a constant state of stress that activates the adrenal glands to exhaustion.
One of the most overlooked ways of dealing with stress is to just breathe. During stressful times we naturally hold our breath. Muscles become tense, nerves are on alert, and we reduce the amount of life-giving oxygen circulating in our blood when we hold our breath. Taking slow, deep breaths instantly calm the nerves and help reduce stress.
3. Take Time for Yourself
As caregivers, teachers, parents, nurturers, and parents, employed or unemployed, we tend to put others first. Sometimes this is necessary, but always doing so can take a toll on our health. Schedule time for relaxation, releasing stresses of the day. This time may come in the form of a hot bath, exercise, meditation, or a walk in nature.
Sometimes the little fixes we try are just not enough to help us reset our emotions and relieve the stress that weighs us down. This is the best time to engage in a Spiritual retreat. A retreat offers a location and time for healing on the deepest level. Letting go, and letting yourself receive the care you deserve sets the tone for a few valuable days of nourishment for the soul.
