When dogs have stinky breath, you can bet that big vet bills aren't far behind. Bad breath in dogs is a sign that bacteria are at work, causing decay, inflammation, and possible infection. In addition, poor dental care for dogs can lead to heart issues down the road as bacteria from the mouth travel through the blood to the heart. It can be a difficult and sad situation unless you begin now to implement natural dental care for dogs - every dog in your family.
Furthermore, dental care for older dogs can become a serious issue if you're evaluating the risk of anesthesia against the need for dental care. Anesthesia can be hard on older, or more sensitive dogs. Though that situation may become necessary, wouldn't it be great to get ahead of dental issues, and perhaps avoid them all together?
I recently stayed at my son's house, caring for their dog while they're away. She's a friendly girl, and likes to snuggle, but her breath nearly knocks me over . . . poor girl. I could see there's some brown teeth in the back, but no swelling or redness. In an attempt to help her out I concocted what I believe will be a great formula to help her heal her mouth and use preventative dental care. Oh, and by the way, it isn't as though my son didn't try other methods. I found at least two other brands of dog toothpaste and a soft toothbrush in her drawer. When I showed her the toothpaste, and offered a taste, she refused. I guess she has an aversion to that one, so it became a challenge for me to make something way better, and I did!
Just a note before I continue. She's already on a great diet - raw food - which has helped her heal her joints naturally. It's a good thing because she likes to bounce! Avoiding unnecessary carbohydrates means a healthier mouth (and healthier body, in general). For dogs, those carbs are like candy which upset the pH balance, linger too long in the gut, and create havoc throughout the immune system. My recipe for natural dental care for dogs is a pleasant experience that matches flavors she loves already, so applying the formula is easy.
This recipe can be made weekly in small doses. That gives you an opportunity to try different flavors, and keep the mix fresh. You won't need a toothbrush. The ingredients do the work. I may even be so bold to say that this recipe outshines any other natural dental care for dogs you may encounter. It doesn't eliminate the recommendation for offering chews. My dog really likes bamboo chews in beef flavor and seems to have a habit of using them at least twice per day!
Using this mixture will help kill germs, balance the pH in the mouth, offer relief to sore gums that may be inflamed, and be tasty enough to make your dog cooperative when it comes to dental care.
I use specific ingredients that become the foundation for what's absolutely necessary. After you include these few special ingredients, you can add flavors of your choice to make it tasty for your own dog. My son's dog appreciate a small lick, with a smile of approval, before I applied the mix. You can use a nitrile glove or your clean finger to smear the mix front and back, on upper and lower teeth. make sure to especially get to the back teeth where most infectious trouble begins.

Ingredients (special, and with good reason). Click the links for Avini access and information. Measurements are approximate.
- Avini Nano Silver Gel, about a tablespoon
- Avini Plus Relief Gel, about a tablespoon
- Coconut oil, about a teaspoon
- Baking soda, without aluminum, perhaps a 1/4 teaspoon
- Crushed dehydrated meat treats, like dehydrated beef liver, lamb lung, or soothing favorite of your choice. Remember, avoid carbohydrates.
Mix all together in a small bowl until thoroughly mixed into a paste. Offer a taste. I think it'll go over well! Lightly smear the paste onto your dog's teeth. You won't need much, and your mixture should last several days. Do this twice per day.
If you want to help kill germs, balance the pH in the mouth, offer relief to sore gums that may be inflamed, and be tasty enough to make your dog cooperative when it comes to dental care. Avini Nano Silver is amazing at killing germs. Avini Plus Relief is a homeopathic anti inflammatory pain reliever that's also good for joints! The other ingredients - coconut oil, and baking soda - are tried and true dental care additions.
A word of caution. . . I deliberately left out essential oils from this mix. Though essential oils are great for health and have many applications to promote healing, most dogs find them too strong of a flavor.
