What Your Feet May Be Telling You About Circulation, Mobility, Balance, and Healthy Aging
About 30 years ago, my health wasn't that great. Oh, I thought I was "fine", but I wasn't. I was a baby when it came to natural healing. My kids were young, and, though I was a stay-at-home mom (retired from teaching Biology), I closely followed medical advice when infections and other challenges arose. That might be another story - of how my daughter became allergic to antibiotics! Regardless, I wasn't very well, nor did I sleep well (waking up in order to breathe). In fact, I had an issue with my toenails. Blackened by a fungus, they exhibited a common malady. My visit to the doctor assured me there was nothing I could do. He could only offer a medication that could potentially harm my liver, offering to test my liver if need be. You see? It wasn't a good solution for me. How would you feel if your solution for toenail fungus was a drug that potentially caused liver issues? Your feet are important indicators for your health.
My good health overshadowed hidden secrets of imbalances inside my body. That toenail fungus, I now know, had a lot to do with poor circulation. Circulation matters when it comes to extremities, and was likely an indicator of imbalances in my body. Fingers and toes become compromised as the body prioritizes other organs. But here's the secret most people DON'T know. Heavy metals and other toxins interfere with good circulation. Especially in the feet, poor circulation means waste and toxins accumulate, often killing healthy cells creating numbness, or causing pain and inflammation. Heavy metals interfere with everything - every biochemical reaction, including the death of cells, and damage to DNA.
I actually had a revelation, quite by accident, when my husband brought home special insoles. These insoles were shown to improve blood flow, and when that happens, carrying nutrients and oxygen to cells, and waste away from cells works more efficiently. Cellular health improves. That's when I saw my toenails heal - right before my eyes - just because I wore special insoles in my shoes twice per day when I took the dog for a walk.
Your Feet Are Messengers
They reveal clues about circulation, movement, balance, strength, and how well we're adapting to the demands we place on our bodies every day. The body adapts. The question becomes whether those adaptations continue to serve us.
You might be someone who's spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars trying to make your feet more comfortable while missing the bigger picture. Your feet depend on circulation. They depend on the body's ability to nourish, repair, and maintain itself.
When circulation slows, when movement decreases, when the body becomes overwhelmed by the demands of modern life, our feet often notice long before we do. Perhaps that's why they have such an incredible story to tell.
The good news is that small daily practices can make a meaningful difference. Try a few minutes of intentional movement, like a little foot massage. Better circulation, improved awareness., supportive tools, and consistent self-care make such a difference!
A Simple Experiment
Take off your shoes. Look at your feet.
- Can you spread your toes?
- Can you comfortably balance on one foot for 30 seconds?
- Can you lift your big toe independently?
- Can you roll a tennis ball beneath your foot and identify areas of tension?
- Can you feel the ground beneath you when you walk?
- (use wall support if you need to for this one) Lift your heals to walk on your toes. Go forward a few small steps. Then try walking backward a few small steps. How'd you do?
You may discover you've become disconnected from your feet long before you lose function somewhere in the body.
Self-care often begins with awareness. Simple choices, repeated over time can easily create a new pathway for total body wellness. Your feet have carried you through every chapter of your life. They have a story to tell about your health - hidden secrets that are subtle indicators for you to begin a more consistent self-care protocol now.
