How to Nourish an Unlimited Immune System

As a former high school biology teacher, I remember the chapters I taught on the human body, anatomy and physiology, system-by-system. Bones, muscles, digestive, and all the systems in our standard text and lab materials, including various animal dissections to bring the internal workings, evolutionary advances, structures, and ecological developments into concrete form. Studying the immune system was a little more abstract. We looked at blood cells through the microscope, and identified various cells and how they worked. It feels very unemotional as well as visceral now. What we should have talked about was how this superbly intelligent immune system could be strengthened, supported, and nourished to be more effective. We should have put all systems together to weave how they worked together - how the liver, bones, blood, digestion, brain, and heart all play a part in our quest to survive and thrive! We should have better prepared ourselves to think about the body as a whole - mysterious and magical in its ability to heal. Here's where we can all become more educated now, to learn how to nourish an unlimited immune system - one that works beautifully for you and for your pets.

I often think that modern medicine has things backwards. If a person has an allergy or an auto-immune disorder, a likely recommendation would be to suppress or stop the allergic reaction by chemically stopping an immune response. This feels counterintuitive to me. Don't we want our immune systems to work correctly? Rather than beat it down into submission, doesn't it make sense to nourish and coach it instead? Shouldn't we consider why an immune system goes haywire in the first place?

How to Identify 3 Things That Diminish Your Immune Power

Of course, the body is complicated with many interwoven biochemical reactions, emotions, stored traumas, experiences, genetics, and environmental exposures. Let's see if we can just focus on 3 indicators that an immune system might need recalibrating.

  1. Gut health. Do you feel bloated, have trouble digesting or moving food through your system (including elimination)? Are you sensitive to certain foods that seem to trigger a rash, acidic backlash, upset stomach, and weight instability? Then take a look at gut health. It's not just fiber that's important here, but also your gut microbiome, or the bacteria living in your gut. Good bacteria are helpful for digestion. Bad ones are not. It's also about the health of your gut lining. Just four layers thick, it's easy to create leaks. Leaky gut allows undigested food to pass through the lining into the bloodstream which triggers an autoimmune response. Heal the gut to help heal the immune system.
  2. Fatigue. There might be something stealing your energy. Could it be parasites? Mercury toxicity? pH balance? They're actually all related. When you're toxic with heavy metals, your pH becomes more acidic, and you attract parasites, which by the way, love the toxic environment. Certain bacteria also thrive in an acidic and toxic environment. Parasites and heavy metals consume your oxygen, and deplete your energy, as well as interfere with sound sleep. In addition, cancer cells love an acidic environment low in oxygen. Strengthening your immune system helps identify these and other unhealthy cells, target parasites, and free your body to heal naturally.
  3. Medications. Let's just say for a moment that a healthy body doesn't need medications. If you agree, then taking medications may seem counterintuitive. The lists of side-effects can include suppressing the immune system, digestive upset, irritation, and a plethora of symptoms that might not appeal to you, especially if you prefer to be medication free. The need to take medications may tell you that not only is one thing "off" in your body, but there may be other systems affected. Seeking balance by removing toxins, supporting gut health, and feeding your immune system may be the solution to help you heal.

How to Access the Power of Your Immune System

Nourish. It's pretty simple, really. As we grow more conscious of the dangers of processed foods, we should also become more aware of foods that heal. That's right! It's not just about fiber and vegetables, or proteins and balanced, whole foods. Building a working immune system means medicinal foods, like medicinal mushrooms. Certain mushrooms are known for their tumor suppressing abilities, while others improve communication between immune system cells. They work better (not harder) at identifying foreign invaders and targeting them for destruction. As a side benefit, medicinal mushrooms can calm anxiety, alleviate depression, improve mood, sleep, and energy. It turns out that feeding your immune system is a good idea that helps many aspects of good living.
