The Truth About Pain Relief for Pets

It matters when your dog or cat is in pain, but how can you tell? And if there's pain, you likely want to know the cause and what to do about it. What causes pain in pets? Injuries, aging, and disease are a few causes for pain that come to mind. All 3 of these can feel like they come on suddenly, but the fact is that your pet is an expert at hiding pain. It's instinct to hide weaknesses from the pack. A trip to the vet can help diagnose an issue, but the truth about pain relief for pets is that modern medicine can't offer much - and it's not that different from what people would also use for pain relief. Serious side-effects, ineffective results, and lack of what you really want - healing - can stifle your progress, and maybe even cause great harm. For dogs, your veterinarian would likely prescribe a narcotic, like Tramadol or Demerol, which make your dog sleepy and have undesirable consequences. The vet may also prescribe an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug). These also offer limited results and terrible side effects; mostly digestive issues like diarrhea, or possibly damage to delicate tissues. For cats, every single pain medicine can potentially cause kidney failure. So the vet probably won’t give you anything.

Not surprisingly, the total market for companion animals in the US reached an estimated $124 billion (2021). Over $13 billion of that was spent on medication for the animals, with the annual US market for companion animal pain relievers at more than $250 million. We certainly don't want our pets to experience pain. Fortunately, there are better answers.

Natural Remedies for Pet Pain Relief

I didn't have all the answers right away, but embraced what I could as it came into my awareness. I'll go in order of my awareness, but understand that every solution has tremendous benefits. They work even better together.

Acupuncture

Years ago, we utilized acupuncture for Ginger, our dear and sweet old yellow lab. She benefited greatly with weekly treatments. In 2006 to 2008 when she received acupuncture treatments from her holistic vet, the cost wasn't completely covered by insurance, and we paid around $100 per session which often included tuning forks and Reiki. (We had an amazingly talented veterinarian we loved!) We believe our holistic approach to helping her feel better worked, and now we're able to do even more. We continued with acupuncture, and even light therapy, cold laser and infrared, for our next dog for a torn cruciate ligament in her knee, as well as in her elder years.

Energy Healing Reiki

I became trained in Reiki when my dog, Ginger, was in great need. It helped, and she received energy healing every day. I'd lie on the floor next to her and place my hands on her. We fell asleep together and Reiki flowed. Energy healing feels good to both the recipient and the giver. We both were healing together. (Read Ginger's Story here.) Now, as a Reiki Master Teacher, I train others in Reiki for self-care, Reiki for pets, and certification to become licensed in energy healing.

Vibrational Sound Therapy

I love how receptive animals are to energy healing. Sound healing with tuning forks can provide an interesting adjunct to other therapies. Apply weight tuning forks to areas that need relief. Watch the video for more tips. If learning these techniques feels important to you, I offer tuning forks and training with certification.

Plus Relief for Pets

Perhaps one of the easiest solutions for pain relief comes as a homeopathic gel containing a specific peptide extracted from the Asian Cobra venom. Plus Relief for Pets (flavored), and Plus Relief topical gel (unflavored) are my go-to quick pain relievers that have no side effects.
