The Spiritual Shaman

Today I attended a religious service – a funeral – for an old acquaintance. She was the wife of the man who designed and built our house. I remember working with her as our house came together. She helped me choose colors, tiles, and bring our home to life with personality. I saw her as an artist, so I chose bright colors to wear in her honor.

The mass gathered at our old church down the street from us. Aside from changing a few words in the formulated responses easily pulled from my memory, the service was the same as many I’ve attended in the past. Yes, it’s been many years since I’ve chosen to attend formal Catholic services. However, I see myself to be even more spiritual as a Reiki Master and shaman than ever before.

The opening song, On Eagle’s Wings, provided the refrain for how I feel as a deeply spiritual being. The melody came easily to me, remembering more of the song verse-by-verse. Yet tears formed in my eyes, catching the words in my throat. Why? Was I emotional from the grief for her family?

“And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.” by Josh Groban

Upon reflecting further on these words that touched my heart and soul, I saw a connection that had been missing in my view of religious practice. What I knew in my head, but had briefly forgotten, is the fact that rites have deep shamanic roots. We draw upon nature and the connection to animals, celestial bodies, the directions, and the forces of the unseen for spiritual nourishment.

Raise You Up on Eagle’s Wings

golden-eagle-flying-wallpaperIn my shamanic practices, I frequently call upon brother eagle (in my case, Golden Eagle) to work with me for healing, supporting the transition of soul fragments my clients may present during a session. Brother eagle appears (in my inner vision), larger than anyone can imagine, able to easily carry the burdens and wounds held in darkness. The first time Golden Eagle appeared to me during a healing session I was surprised – and yet not surprised at all. The size amazed me. Unlike the physical body eagle maintains on earth, Spirit eagle has no limitations from any of our perceptions, including size or the ability to assist in healing. Eagle is one of Spirit’s (God’s) many forms to which I can relate. Its strength, keen “seeing”, and great ancient wisdom radiate the light of Spirit, penetrating into infinity as eagle carries away all that anyone is willing to release and heal.

Breath of Dawn

Are there any words more beautiful than those? Dawn’s beginning in the east signifies new life – one free of the burdens of a physical body. Breath is life. We inhale upon physical birth, and exhale upon death or the release of the soul from the physical limitations of the body. With each breath we honor Spirit within. Conscious breathing – inhaling and exhaling – provides the intention of connecting to God on an infinite level. Imagine the infinity symbol. Effortlessly moving in a figure-eight pattern, infinite breath enters and leaves, mingling with the essence of humanity. The breath of dawn is the Creator that manifests in all life – coming and going, so to speak. Though humans may physically stop inhaling and exhaling, the breath of dawn is constant. It’s my privilege to connect with and honor the breath of dawn each day as a ritual in my practice.

Shine Like the Sun

The truth is that we all shine like the sun in our original, spiritual form. The spiritual light (like the sun) radiates original medicine – the expression of who we are, our gifts and talents, as well as the chosen path in life. What keeps people from expressing that light is that, for many people, they’ve forgotten who they are. The traumas and burdens of the physical world penetrate deeply into the known senses – hearing, tasting, smelling, touching, and seeing what seems real in the moment. These perceptions feel so real that they mask the more innate perceptions of the intuitive senses with which we are all born. These intuitive senses connect humans to God effortlessly. For some, it’s through dreams or day-dreaming. For others, it feels more like a sense of “knowing” or a gut-feeling. These senses are the manifestation of remembering that we are like the sun, filled with radiant light. I consider shining like the sun a journey of remembering, and an honor to be a lighthouse (“Lightworker”) for others.

Held in the Palm of His Hand

Sacred Space, the healing, nurturing environment created through the work of hands and intentions, offers the ultimate experience for healing. So often people think of death as an ending to life. However, in my years of practice, I’ve discovered that the experiences we have in this lifetime are the illusion away from Source, away from the Palm of His Hand, and away from the Sacred Space of healing wisdom. In Reiki healing classes, palms become activated with intention, and a laying-on-of-hands ensues. Powerful healing energies that come from the Universe (Source, God, Spirit, etc.) flow through the crown, the heart, and out the palms. In our infancy as spiritual practitioners, we imitate using the Palms of God’s Hands. It’s the greatest complement to God to be more spiritual, for our spirituality increases not only in us, but also in God. As a Reiki Master and practicing, modern, universal shaman, I continuously hold the energy and intention of healing.

The Spiritual Shaman

Awakening is the opportunity to become fully aware of original medicine, accessing the desire to connect to a higher vibration or way of being in the world. Awakening means that the illusion fades as the veil that separates us from Source becomes thinner. The shamans and Lightworkers of the world assist humanity in remembering, connecting humans once again to humanity through healing, going into the darkness, and coming into the light once again. We access the power of All That Is in effortless Grace from the breath of the Divine, the Light of the Sun, and the healing wisdom of the many who’ve come before us.

The power of remembering becomes possible when eagle’s wings carry away the burdens and traumas weighing heavily on the soul. Though grief’s process requires that we remember our pain before we can heal, the breath of dawn reminds us that we are whole, vibrant beings of love and light already.

Choose your path.

Reclaiming Spiritual Power

red rocksThe red rocks of Sedona, Arizona stand as beacons in the high desert, emanating their calm stature as storehouses of power for the ones who seek them. Though I enjoy hiking “up”, I felt it was much more important for me on this visit to stay grounded. Thus, on a recent visit to Bell Rock I made a profound connection that guided me further than I imagined. Here’s a bit of my story of dis-empowerment and reclaiming my power.

Last week I visited a friend in Sedona, AZ with the intention of being with my friend, Lori (Raven’s Call) doing a little hiking around the red rocks, offering a “Healing Pain” workshop, connecting to spirit in profound ways, and receiving a little healing for myself . . . a list full of engaging experiences. As always, I grow from these encounters and come away with a little more than I expected.

sedona agateThe drive up to Sedona from the Phoenix airport became an hour longer than usual due to an accident on the highway ahead of us. However, finally I was delivered safely to my friend who was visiting a sister-friend in a nearby town. I felt instantly at ease and at home with Rebecca who teaches shamanic ways, offers spiritual retreats, and a vision she holds for the future. In fact, I know Rebecca from previous correspondences when I purchased a few beloved crystals from her. This time, I chose a black agate that nearly jumped out at me from a table of other stones. She immediately gifted me the stone as she remarked how just earlier that day she put it out from her personal collection. I felt an instant bond with this stone, and slept with it by my side for several nights as it blessed me with clear dreams.

While in Sedona, I did a healing session for a man who is experiencing an invasion of his personal power through his current illness. Without going into his personal details, we focused on cleansing and, in fact, purging his “stuff”. As I facilitated his healing, we worked together to reclaim his power and see his condition through a new lens. Finally, we felt we were finished and I immediately took the few minutes to cleanse and detach from all energies we encountered. It wasn’t enough for me, and the consequences I felt, though dis-empowering, were also a revelation for more to come.

The feeling of dis-empowerment subtly crept in. One instance after another, the cascade of “mistakes” flooded my field. To a casual observer, it might appear coincidental to have “stuff go wrong”. To an empath like myself, these energies were obviously striking blows to my core. Even after a late, short walk to Bell Rock as the sun sank behind the horizon I didn’t realize what was happening. I went to bed early, feeling drained and awkwardly defeated for no apparent reason. The new stone I adopted refused to be with me as I slept, and elected to keep a short distance instead.

Dreams of ceremony, balance, and rejuvenation crystallized in the night. I awoke early with a “cure” for my personal dis-empowered state. Quickly, I drew a hot bath with Epsom salts, adding frankincense essential oil to coconut oil, and infusing the bath water with it. Next, I filled a tall glass with water, adding my chakra crystal set along with a few drops of frankincense in the glass of water. Completely immersed in the sacred water, I ritually submerged, washed, and anointed myself with blessings. Finally, I drank the water held by the glass, and added the crystals to my bath water. Instantly I felt better for having taken the time, listening to my guides and dreams in order to reclaim my power.

Interestingly, the man for whom I did the healing session is also a powerful healer. He knows that his circumstances can cause such reactions as I experienced and claims I’m not alone for feeling as wiped out as I did. Yet, in a follow up session he had with another healer, he was obviously clearer, and brighter. (He says that “I’m a good healer”. :))

I believe it’s the foundational practices I intuitively have in place that protect me and keep me as strongly empowered as I am. I know when it’s important to ground, and not climb, for example. I’m not only sensitive to crystals and dreams, but I act on the messages I receive. I select which crystals to wear each day, and choose how I feel about my experiences. Sometimes stuff goes “wrong” . . . or does it really? Choosing to be empowered also means that you recognize when you feel dis-empowered. Take the time you need to perform the rituals that help you feel balanced, nurtured, and stronger for having done so.

tipiFinally, as I readied myself to leave Sedona, my friend remarked on our experiences of the week. You see, we built a tipi in her back yard which consumed much of our time and labor. She was almost apologetic for the time it took, but I reminded her how we created Sacred Space. That’s the final lesson for reclaiming your spiritual power. Creating Sacred Space comes first from within – inside your personal practices of cleansing and balancing. Then Sacred Space is supported by the one you create in your environment.

I invite you to recognize your personal power and reclaim it. How do you move in the world? What are the words you choose to speak? How do you feel about money, relationships, and sense of purpose? It all matters. Let me help you find your way. In-person sessions, Reiki classes and Online Courses for Embodied Spirit await you. I’d love to hear from you about your personal power and your journey. Reach out to me. I’m here.

Spirituality of Unconditional Source

20180730_145911Last week as I chose a crystal to accompany me on my meditation, I let go of any preconceived ideas about which crystal to choose and for which purpose. My only intention, honestly, was to have a friend along to be present with me while I connected to the divine. Oh, yes, sometimes I choose a specific stone with which to work. Maybe it’s one that’s newly acquired, or jumping out at me from my table of assorted crystals. However, in this case, the crystal that wanted to join me on my journey was a “singing quartz point” I received from a friend in Arizona. I was originally drawn to having such a crystal in my set of crystal friends when I first met one more than a year ago while in teacher training for advanced sound healing classes. Little did I know that bringing one into my life would have such a profound impact.

The Physical Nature of Spirit

First, let me tell you about the physical nature of this particular quartz crystal. As with most quartz points, this one has six sides, and six facets which all come to a point at one end with a growth pattern of 4-5-3-3-4-5. That means that each of the pointed facets have edges that, when counted may reveal something about its nature and function. It has markings on the sides indicating its use as a record keeper. There is some indication of “damage” which created a rainbow effect in one intersection of the faces. Small crystals attached to two of the sides are referred to as barnacles indicating new energy, while markings of an imprint embed the energy of a crystal that may have grown adjacent to this one. Partly clear and partly clouded, it’s the perfect balance of masculine and feminine wisdom.

Though people most often associate physical characteristics of quartz points with their energy and their meaning, I like to notice those features “second”, after I get to know the feeling of the spirit within the crystal. I often prompt my Reiki students to rely on their own senses to receive messages from any crystals we have in class. As I sat in silence and quieted my mind, I was quickly invited IN, inside the crystal, as I have often experienced when meditating with quartz. Experiencing the feeling of quartz from an inside perspective slows things down and I can see as well as feel the inner nature of the Being with whom I’m communicating. Images of molecular structure and the 3-dimensional components of chemistry and biology passed by my mind as I went deeper into the story unfolding before me. I heard the word “conditional” and instantly knew that the crystal held to my heart as well as the crystal in which I walked spoke to me about how the 3-dimensional world relied on what we understood as Laws of Science. Atoms get together, electrons move around, one molecule joins with another, and so forth, because that’s the way our earth exists for us.

Then my focus shifted to the space between the atoms and physical structures. The space became vast, uncluttered by physical construction, patterns, and “conditions”. I felt myself become instantly uplifted and unencumbered by my own physicality. I heard the word “unconditional” and knew, at least in part, the meaning of the message. The Divine Source exists in the unconditional state – in the spaces between the fabrication of our seen reality. Objects and structures exist only on the “condition” of scientific laws, the ones we understand and apply to 3-dimensional rules . . . positive attracts negative, for example. In the unconditional realm of infinite possibilities, we must give up any misconceptions about our existence.

What If?

Though science tells me that silicone dioxide makes up the chemical composition of quartz, it feels to me that simplifying a spiritual being (the one dwelling in quartz on this dimensional plane) overlooks the magic we all hold inside us. We’re unconditional beings living in a conditional world. What if we approached our sense of being and purpose as “magical”, “unlimited”, and “unconditional”?

Sometimes I hear words that come across as excuses as to why a person can’t achieve their goals, have money, prosperity, love, joy, clarity, and all the things that feel beyond reach to them. Though I won’t diminish how people really feel about their circumstances or the moments that led up to their conditional conclusions, I will offer that perhaps another view exists – one already inside us, in the spaces between the physical structures of muscles, bones, cells, and electrons. Those spaces are much more vast, and more powerful than the 3-dimensional conditional “reality” outside of spirit.

Embodied Spirit

Purification

During a recent Reiki class here at my healing center in Portland, we prepared for the weekend as we always do – setting an intention for self and others – then drawing a card from a well-loved deck of oracle cards. One card that came up was called Purification, and the messages it brought seemed to ring true for not only the student who chose it, but for everyone throughout the weekend. Why might that happen? Is there some significance about purification that matters enough to keep “speaking” to us over the course of two days?

Purification is defined as the removal of something (a toxin, an element, an entity, for example) from a person’s physical body, the environment, or from any substance to contain compounds or constituents that are not a part of the WHOLE. Spiritually speaking, purification may involve releasing more than removing. The difference comes from self-instituted intentions for empowerment. What needs cleansing?

Self

Just as with healing, the first part of cleansing always begins with SELF. What would you cleanse for yourself? We care for the physical body with daily washing – showering, hand washing, etc. – on the outside. However, cleansing on the inside is of utmost importance. Consider foods, choosing raw and unprocessed as much as possible over processed. Consider personal care products, choosing clean and natural over synthetic ones filled with chemical additives. Consider filtered water over tap or bottled water. Consider antioxidants and natural supplements (minerals, herbs, zeolite) over sugars and hydrogenated fats.

Environment

Your personal space should be considered next in the purification process. What have you accumulated as “stuff” over the years that no longer serve you? What’s in your space that really isn’t yours? Do you have a process in place that ensures optimal support for your clean, pure self? Consider the chemicals you choose for cleaning in your home. Are they natural essential oils or synthetic chemicals and toxic poisons? Are you using plastic containers, a microwave oven, non-stick cookware with PFOAs? Having a clean, toxin-free environment is part of the purification process. However, also consider sound, light, and people as part of the environment. How can you improve and purify in these areas?

Intention

As a part of Reiki training, I offers several methods of purification to assist in holding the energy for safe and sacred space, and to help clear unwanted energies from the etheric field as well as from our sacred spaces. Intention is a powerful tool to use for purification. Formulate how you would intend for your space to be clear of unwanted energies. Design a statement that represents what you really want. If this seems daunting, confusing, or overwhelming, start with a simple awareness of how you feel in any particular space or situation. Notice how you’d prefer to feel and go with words that support that feeling. For example, you might use words like, “I feel safe.”

Purification Tools

I’ve made a short list here of tools you can use for cleansing. Remember that these tools are intended more for empowerment as you go through the process of purification. They help you release, letting go of energies that no longer support your purity, wholeness, and manifestation of the highest expression of yourself.

Essential Oils

Plant medicine may be the easiest to use and the easiest to obtain. Use plants in their “original” form as leaves, roots, stems, and flowers. However, using pure therapeutic grade essential oils from Young Living may be even more potent (and more valuable) for your needs. Whether in meditation, ceremony, or cleansing your environment, these essential oils work magically to bring about a feeling of wholeness and purity. Here are a few I like for sacred ceremony and purification. Use them in a diffuser, spritzer, or apply a drop directly to hands, gently rub in and inhale.

Sound Vibrations

Sound frequencies, whether using your own voice (as in chanting, singing, or toning) or selecting an instrument of sound such as a tuning fork or drum, provide many benefits for purification. Try, for example, a higher frequency of 4096 Hz to call in the angelic realm, or the frequency of OM to feel more grounded and connected to earth energy.

tuning forks

  • Angel – 4096 Hz
  • OM – 136.1 Hz
  • Solfeggio 528 – Magic and Transformation
  • Chanting, toning
  • Drum
  • Rattle

Working with Guides

When I was writing this webinar I realized that my topic of working with guides rapidly grew to include subjects that are sometimes hard to talk about – like pain and suffering. The web of discovery, growth, and stepping further along your path of spiritual mastery isn’t always pleasant. You can’t just look it up in a book or flip open an oracle deck of cards to get answers to the tough questions. Though those tools are fun and exciting (and often very satisfyingly accurate), spiritual mastery involves reaching deep into your psyche to uncover the stuff of nightmares, hardships, and challenges as well as discovery, alignment, truth, and wholeness.

In tonight’s webinar we draw attention to the Wounded Healer in shamanic practices. Learn more about loneliness, suffering, and a way to find truth and clarity in working with guides.

When Your Heart Speaks, Are You Listening?

In all my biology classes that I ever attended or taught, I never learned anything about the heart like I’m about to share here in this class for Spiritual Mastery. The heart’s physiology is indeed fascinating. I was hooked on the heart’s anatomy and physiology at a young age – enthralled by the transparent images overlapping one another in my encyclopedia when I was only about ten years old. I followed the arteries and veins of the circulatory system as arrows pointed out the direction of deoxygenated blood flowing from heart to lungs, then oxygenated blood flowing from lungs to heart, up to the brain and throughout the body. I loved the idea that valves opened and closed, directing not only the direction of the flow, but also the rhythm and speed of the pump. Lub-dub, lub-dub. Lub-dub. I felt for my pulse inquisitively in my neck and wrist, marveling that my whole body echoed the rhythm in my chest.

When you’re a child, there’s room for delight and discovery with the physical nature of the body.  Our embodiment as spiritual beings carries the essence of life, vibrating in harmony with life in the universe. Just as we stir in the early hours of the day to awaken our physical awareness, we also activate our harmonic coherence to the rising sun in its warmth, light, and sounds of nature awakening also. We’re in rhythm with earth’s rotation facing us toward and away from the sun, as well as its yearly revolution informing us of the seasonal changes. In our dream state we harmonize with the rhythm of our breath, letting the innate systems of our bodies forget the tasks of thinking, remembering, and doing to simply BE in a state of harmony while we sleep.

Yet, as adults (or even as school-age children) we subject ourselves to a different timepiece – one of obligation, judgement, habit, and resistance. How do these rhythms affect our lives as we continue to live and grow in our relationships, at home and at work? How can we tap into harmony, health, prosperity and abundance with ease?

The forgotten piece of the puzzle is the heart. I don’t mean its anatomy or physiology. I’m referring to the spirituality of the heart that is closely tied to innate wisdom. Learn more in my Spiritual Mastery Webinar. Then give me a call to set up a time when you can tap into your heart’s wisdom – the wisdom to which your brain seems to not always listen.

Animal Guides and Teachers

When working with animal guides and teachers, we can summon the assistance of cards, images, sounds and artifacts related to animals. In my healing center, I invoke specific animals guides with crystal or wooden likenesses that serve as reminders of the qualities of each animal represented. For example, in the north corner of my space I have a wooden carving of an elephant. This elephant guide reminds of heavy structure, strength, connection to earth energies, and commitment to family. It feels very solid and affirming. Similarly, I also have actual representations of specific animals – feathers, fur or skin, fossils, and shells. These I either use directly in healing sessions, or place in their respective areas of the room.

Cards and images may also be used when working with animal guides and teachers. I especially like the decks and images from Susan Seddon Boulet who painted images for her Animal Spirits deck.

Medicine Cards: The Discovery of Power Through the Ways of Animals by Jamie Sams is a combination book and deck of cards through which you can do readings, card layouts, or selecting a single card for inspiration and guidance.

Animal Speak by Ted Andrews is another wonderful resource. Ted Andrews also has an inspirational card deck for working with animal guides.

No matter what your choice, begin your exploration in any way you are drawn. Animals, because they are grounded and of pure love & light are safe guides for anyone, from novice to advanced readers and healers. Let me know what you’ve chosen. I’d love to hear from you.

You can reach Rosemary here.

Animal Guides and Teachers

As Healers on the Healer’s Journey, we often find animals in our awareness. They’re either in our care as personal pets, in our environment, our dreams, and even displayed as decorations in jewelry, household items, and motifs. However animals appear to you, your awareness of them is key. Join us for this webinar as we touch upon Animal Guides and Teachers.
