What Happens When You’re Not Clear?

I can’t help but shake my head over this thought – the one about how CLEAR I am right now. It’s SO obvious! Having clarity about my sense of purpose, my personal power, and vision of what comes next is so joyful that I can hardly keep still. I realize now that, even though I was “close” to my purpose and power, I wasn’t quite there. There were a few things missing that I’d like to share with you about being clear.

What Happens When You’re NOT Clear

You Feel Stuck. What is it they say about doing the same thing over and over and getting the same results? Oh yes, insanity. Well, I wasn’t quite there, but month after month I followed somewhat of a routine that really wasn’t giving me the results I said I wanted. It was like boarding a plane that just sat on the tarmac. Instead of taking off, I was going nowhere. Then I wondered why I was frustrated. Hmmm . . .

You Get Distracted. My attention was all over the place. I love everything I do, and I have a lot of different things going on simultaneously. I used to call it being “busy”, when in reality I was distracted from my purpose. In trying to help people AND animals, run a business, be on a board, write articles, belong to organizations, teach classes and take appointments, I found myself not really doing what I now know is my purpose.

You Feel Unworthy. This was one of the hardest signs to accept. Even though I always felt worthy, I didn’t feel as worthy as my children or even strangers whom I was trying to help. I put myself last. Does that one sound familiar? I know now it’s really part of my purpose to feel worthy. Worthiness means that I’m showing up for others in the best possible way – strong, centered, and worthy enough to be recognized and paid for the invaluable skills I’ve developed as I’ve invested in myself. It’s liberating to feel worthy again.

Things Are Slow. I told myself that eventually I’d get more clients, have more students, and help more people.  I thought I just had to keep doing what I was doing (see the first sign – feeling stuck) Oh, my business did grow over the years. I also grew – tremendously, in fact, in my spiritual practice, skills, healing techniques and intuitive abilities. I’m pretty visible in the world of Reiki practitioners and local businesses. However, what I didn’t really understand was this. Spirit (God, the Universe, etc.) LOVES speed. When you’re in alignment with your purpose, everything just falls into place and things happen quickly. The Universe says “yes”, and you can feel yourself finally going in ONE direction – the direction of clarity and purpose.

You Feel Fearful. I come across FEAR quite a bit in my practice. It shows up as lack of money, wounds around religion and relationships, avoidance to change or letting go, and many other symptoms. For me, I associated fear with change. I thought that if I let go of some of the products or services I offered that people wouldn’t connect with me – silly, I know. What really needed to happen was a slight shift in my perception toward becoming clear, and all the fear went away. I became excited with the possibilities of new adventure that felt focused (not distracted). I knew that letting go erased my fear.

There’s Never Enough. Name it – money, time, amenities, travel, prosperity, joy, richness in life, FREEDOM. If you’re feeling LACK, you’re not clear on your purpose. There’ll always be lack if you’re in alignment with lack. You look for it, justify it (see the point about worthiness), rationalize it and find ways to support that there never enough. It stinks, so stop it.

You Feel it in Your Body. Eventually, all the feelings, events, traumas, and stress show up in physical form as dis-ease symptoms. As your energetic vibration lowers, your body suffers the effects. If you’re aware of the subtleties, you can catch these symptoms before they get out-of-hand. Weight gain, for example, might be no big deal, but it might be a sign that you’re not processing foods well (digestion), have a lower metabolism (endocrine), or feel like you need extra protection (emotional). Humans are complex organisms, and you know your body better than anyone. Check-in to the nuances of feeling healthy and come into alignment with what feels good. Certainly avoid the other stuff and honor what your body is trying to tell you.

How to Get Clear

I’ll say this as simply as possible. You are amazing, you are whole, there’s nothing wrong with you. You have everything you need to manifest prosperity, joy, health, and abundance in your life right now. Anything not in alignment with this is just not TRUE. When you find YOUR TRUTH, you’ll be very clear on your purpose.

Why I Hated Coaching

You’ve probably been there, like I have – around the “coaching block” – no pun intended. In this brief article, I’d like to outline a few reasons why I hated coaching and how I came to LOVE an actual style of coaching that really resonates with highly intuitive, sensitive people.

Too Confusing

My first experience with coaching was that it was an actual “thing” many years ago, before I even considered the path I was on and who I would become. I met someone through a networking event, and when we sat down for a chat I felt like we were in separate universes.  Not only didn’t I understand what she did for a living, but I definitely didn’t think it was for me. My mind wandered to someone else she might be able to help – but it wasn’t going to be me. Confused by her message and her occupation, I just didn’t get how we could connect or why I (or anyone else) might need her services. It may sound harsh, I know. But I take some responsibility in this since I wasn’t ready and she wasn’t speaking my language.

Too Pushy

Over the years as my business grew more toward helping people heal, and teaching Reiki, I spoke with other coaches. More than one coach I remember stand out as “pushy”. They had an agenda to sign me up for stuff I certainly didn’t think I needed – or wanted! They were operating from THEIR reasons, not mine, and looked for buttons to push to get me to do something about my “horrible” situation . . . their words, not mine, which brings me to the next reason why I hated coaching.

Too Offensive

How do you feel about name-calling? I thought so. I don’t like it either. I also don’t like people telling me what to do, and how to do it. Under the guise of “truth”, several coaches attempted to identify my “problem” for me. They said it out loud as if to make me feel guilty, humiliated, less than wonderful (as my mother always thought I was – wonderful, that is). I now see it was attempt to get me to slouch low and remit my money to their program. They were somehow going to “fix” me and my business. Seriously?

Too Much Work

Then there were the times I participated in coaching calls and used workbooks. I had to “think”, write, analyze, and do stuff – kind of like homework. Though I was a bright student and excelled at school (I became a biology teacher), that style of coaching made me feel like I was back in school. School is modeled on masculine principles of right-brain brain thinking. I’ve been there, and done that. It’s definitely too much work that didn’t really get me anywhere.

Something Was Missing

I couldn’t put my finger on it at the time, but something was definitely missing from the coaching programs and people I came across over the years. Back then, I didn’t have a clear picture of myself, who I was and how I wanted to live my life. If I jumped into the programs I encountered, it felt like I’d be on someone else’s path of what my life should or could be like. One program came close to being really good! I even have a mission statement I wrote from that experience that still resonates with me. However, the program itself was developed by a company that wanted us to be better “employees” by being better people. Good thinking, but there was still something missing.

So, What Kind of Coaching Works?

  1. Crystal Clear – Relatable, authentic, familiar language that speaks to the nature of a person’s SOUL
  2. No Agenda – No push for a sale, no concern over not getting hired. Just help, help, help – because it’s so needed in the world! Money is energy – not paper. Laws of the Universe say that the more we give, the more we get. If the focus is on “getting”, try turning it around.
  3. Kindness – Compassion, wisdom and understanding all come from the heart. Everyone has their time-table and their reasons. Honor each individual for who they are and why they’re coming to you.
  4. No judgement – No analysis, no outer work. The kind of work to expect in coaching shouldn’t really feel like work. It should be joyful! If you’re calling it “hard”, try a different way.
  5. Prioritize – Great coaching includes healing, discovery, joy and excitement as well as self-care. A holistic practice includes all aspects of relating to people. From that, we find a deeper understanding of who we are and why we’re here.

Over the years working with clients and students, I’ve developed a sense of awareness that goes beyond right-brain thinking and analyzing. It’s called intuition. This seems to be the one missing element to other coaching programs I’ve experienced. Yes, there are skills for coaching – and I’m trained as a Licensed Spiritual Healer. Knowing what to say and how to relate to people are extremely important. However, tapping into Divine Wisdom is a gift and a skill I’ve cultivated over the years. I teach you how to do that, too.

Seeking a Cure or Real Healing

Why People Don’t Heal

Cure. It’s a little word with a big punch. It means that symptoms of disease disappear or become alleviated. A cure for cancer means that cancer goes away, right? Not really. A cure for any viral disease, auto-immune disease, or chronic disease just means that symptoms no longer feel threatening. Life goes on and people feel better for having survived the scare. However, curing cancer or any other disease may just mean a temporary reprieve. Unless real healing is the main goal, then disease may recur – often with a vengeance. So, are you seeking a cure or would you rather heal? What’s the difference, and why does this difference matter?

Real Healing

To be free from injury, to become whole again, to become sound or healthy again are all phrases associated with healing. Yet, they fail to tell you how that happens, or what’s really necessary for healing to occur. Does one become sound or free from illness when cancer is “cured” through chemical treatments? Is there freedom from injury after a broken bone is set or the wound closes? Do medications that alleviate symptoms and help you “manage” fit into the category of healing? I only ask these questions because they’re relevant to a truer version of wholeness – a goal sought by an aging population where cancer and heart disease are the top two diseases in the country. The “fix me” approach to heath isn’t really healing, but rather a management of symptoms. More importantly, it’s a giving up of personal power, and the under-estimated impact trauma, emotions, and energy have on one’s ability to truly heal. These are the real reasons why many people don’t fully heal.

On the Outside

Cuts and scrapes close up. Wounds grow new skin. The body is amazing in its ability to regenerate cells, almost to the exact replication of genetic material. However, in the process of creating new cells, important factors become overlooked to the unaware observer. The most important factors underlying the body’s ability to effectively heal include emotions and beliefs.

Personal Power

Imagine that you have a vessel of energy. Visualize your vessel filled to the brim with glowing goodness. The vessel continuously fills from an endless fountain directly above it, so that as energy is used, it’s always replenished. Note the characteristics of the vessel. It’s beautiful, solid, and adorned with colors and all sorts of attractive features. In its most perfect state, the vessel and its energy contents are not only representative of personal power, but also who you are as a perfect, whole, healthy spiritual being. Perfect form, perfect energy, and endless fulfillment of personal energy and power define spiritual wholeness, health, prosperity, and joy. Dipping into the fountain is easy, because it’s always being refilled from its source. But that’s not the whole story.

Let’s say your vessel is lovely as you imagined, but somewhat fragile. In fact, there are cracks and broken pieces where the energy seems to be leaking. How could damage to your vessel have happened, and could it be repaired? Damage to the vessel – the physical form – seems inevitable. It’s the result of emotional strain, avoidance, stress, lack, trauma, and injury that weighs heavily on the soul. Burying these events deep in the mind may offer a temporary fix (thanks to the brain and ego, always trying to protect you). Ultimately, damage manifests as dis-ease. If you’re sensitive to your energy and acknowledge the stressors which cause disease, you may take the opportunity to deal with them as they arise. However, more often than not, emotional stress, toxicity, and dis-empowerment accumulate, draining your vessel of life force.

Emotions and Beliefs as Factors for Healing

Try these exercises as they simply illustrate the impact of emotions and beliefs on the body. Have paper and pen handy.

First, take your time to really imagine the following emotions, then write your name after you physically feel them:

  • peace or bliss
  • anger or frustration
  • joy
  • grief

You may notice a difference in the quality of your signature, the size of the letters, and the thickness of the strokes. Your writing is the physical expression of the emotions you’re feeling. Relate this exercise to how your cells might repair damage, injury or disease. Uplifting and positive emotions create a flow that allows for more perfect expression of your healthy cells, while lower vibratory emotions create confusion, tension, and imperfection as cells replicate. Your emotions and your beliefs become your biology to express either health and healing, or the opposite – degradation, disease, and aging.

For the second exercise, look in the mirror and observe your facial expressions. Notice the shape of your eyes and mouth. Notice the wrinkles on your forehead, around your eyes, and near your mouth. Say each of the following beliefs out loud as if you’re an actor in a role, trying to express the true nature of each statement. Fill in the blank with a personal reason for that belief.

  • I am so happy because _____
  • I am afraid because _____
  • I love to _____
  • I am most at peace when _____

Did you notice a difference in your facial features or body language with each belief? What and how you believe manifests physically as health or dis-ease. Therefore, it’s important to notice how your beliefs affect you and make conscious changes toward ease and grace for true healing.

Choosing to Heal

Emotions and beliefs deeply embed themselves in every cell of the body – not just in the brain. Every emotion creates an imprint or a “memory” for the cells to use as templates. How healthy would you like your cells to be? Here’s where you can actively change your biology – how your cells form – to truly heal at the deepest level. This is Spiritual Energy Healing – a shift in vibratory frequencies to facilitate healing at the deepest level.

How Important is Detox?

I heard an interesting statement recently from a well-respected naturopathic doctor in my sphere. He said it’s pointless to begin any course of treatment before detoxification is accomplished. That’s my philosophy, too, and has been for many years. heavy metals, flame retardants, plastics, pesticides, benzene, and chemicals in the home and environment interfere with every aspect of cell function, injury repair, immunity, and general wellbeing. Removing these toxins, then, are critical to supporting the health and vitality of the body for healing.

Since 2006 I’ve actively used a mineral as an oral chelator, which has not only proven to be effective, but also life-saving! I don’t say this lightly. The year 2006 brought many challenges for me. My beautiful yellow lab, Ginger, who was also diabetic, was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma – a blood cancer. We almost lost her the day her spleen ruptured. However, we acted quickly and following surgery worked aggressively to detoxify her and get ahead of her symptoms. Without the surgery, we would have surely lost her. However, given no hope from the medical professionals, we chose to follow a detoxification protocol while supporting her immune system. It worked, and we enjoyed Ginger’s company (without cancer) for a long time after that.

In Ginger’s case, detoxification set the foundation for healthy cells to take over. That was in 2006. Now, more than ten years later, it’s still the beginning protocol I use for myself as well as my clients. In addition, please note that though I’m calling what I do a protocol, it’s really a lifestyle. Choosing to incorporate detoxification and immune support every day means that we may never have to face difficult disease challenges such as cancer. Now, I’m greatly encouraged with additional healing resources that aid in detoxification and immune support. Here are a few Nutritional Supplements I use regularly:

Zeolite, very specifically Natural Cellular Defense, is my number one choice. Heavy metals are severely overlooked as a cause of everything from cancer to auto-immune diseases. NCD2 is the best detoxifier for inorganic substances such as heavy metals and radiation.

Vital minerals in crystalloid form (the tiniest), have a profound detoxification effect. These minerals (available for both humans and canines from Valentus as Prevail Max) seep into the bloodstream in less than a minute when sprayed directly into the mouth. The effects can be seen microscopically almost immediately as blood cells “plump” and begin to make circulation more effective. It’s a superior detoxifier and an essential addition to a zeolite detox.

Essential Oils, again – very specifically – Young Living oils, complete the detoxification profile. Use specific citrus oils, for example, to help cleanse the blood and liver. Select Multigreens for the additional detoxification effects of chlorophyll combined with essential oils.

Cancer Detox Protocol for Humans and Dogs

  • Detoxification, as I mentioned earlier, may be the most overlooked aspect of a healing protocol – one that is really a lifestyle of health and wellness. Though supplements I use are great for detoxification, it’s more than just removing toxins that has to be considered. Look for ways to eliminate toxins from the diet, home environment, products you use regularly, vaccinations, and other medications and treatments.
  • Support a healthy body with whole, clean, minimally processed foods. Eliminate carbohydrates, preservatives, and synthetic additives.
  • Detoxify the emotions. Have a positive environment and outlook on healing. Remove emotional obstacles that prevent optimal results.

The Spiritual Shaman

Today I attended a religious service – a funeral – for an old acquaintance. She was the wife of the man who designed and built our house. I remember working with her as our house came together. She helped me choose colors, tiles, and bring our home to life with personality. I saw her as an artist, so I chose bright colors to wear in her honor.

The mass gathered at our old church down the street from us. Aside from changing a few words in the formulated responses easily pulled from my memory, the service was the same as many I’ve attended in the past. Yes, it’s been many years since I’ve chosen to attend formal Catholic services. However, I see myself to be even more spiritual as a Reiki Master and shaman than ever before.

The opening song, On Eagle’s Wings, provided the refrain for how I feel as a deeply spiritual being. The melody came easily to me, remembering more of the song verse-by-verse. Yet tears formed in my eyes, catching the words in my throat. Why? Was I emotional from the grief for her family?

“And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.” by Josh Groban

Upon reflecting further on these words that touched my heart and soul, I saw a connection that had been missing in my view of religious practice. What I knew in my head, but had briefly forgotten, is the fact that rites have deep shamanic roots. We draw upon nature and the connection to animals, celestial bodies, the directions, and the forces of the unseen for spiritual nourishment.

Raise You Up on Eagle’s Wings

golden-eagle-flying-wallpaperIn my shamanic practices, I frequently call upon brother eagle (in my case, Golden Eagle) to work with me for healing, supporting the transition of soul fragments my clients may present during a session. Brother eagle appears (in my inner vision), larger than anyone can imagine, able to easily carry the burdens and wounds held in darkness. The first time Golden Eagle appeared to me during a healing session I was surprised – and yet not surprised at all. The size amazed me. Unlike the physical body eagle maintains on earth, Spirit eagle has no limitations from any of our perceptions, including size or the ability to assist in healing. Eagle is one of Spirit’s (God’s) many forms to which I can relate. Its strength, keen “seeing”, and great ancient wisdom radiate the light of Spirit, penetrating into infinity as eagle carries away all that anyone is willing to release and heal.

Breath of Dawn

Are there any words more beautiful than those? Dawn’s beginning in the east signifies new life – one free of the burdens of a physical body. Breath is life. We inhale upon physical birth, and exhale upon death or the release of the soul from the physical limitations of the body. With each breath we honor Spirit within. Conscious breathing – inhaling and exhaling – provides the intention of connecting to God on an infinite level. Imagine the infinity symbol. Effortlessly moving in a figure-eight pattern, infinite breath enters and leaves, mingling with the essence of humanity. The breath of dawn is the Creator that manifests in all life – coming and going, so to speak. Though humans may physically stop inhaling and exhaling, the breath of dawn is constant. It’s my privilege to connect with and honor the breath of dawn each day as a ritual in my practice.

Shine Like the Sun

The truth is that we all shine like the sun in our original, spiritual form. The spiritual light (like the sun) radiates original medicine – the expression of who we are, our gifts and talents, as well as the chosen path in life. What keeps people from expressing that light is that, for many people, they’ve forgotten who they are. The traumas and burdens of the physical world penetrate deeply into the known senses – hearing, tasting, smelling, touching, and seeing what seems real in the moment. These perceptions feel so real that they mask the more innate perceptions of the intuitive senses with which we are all born. These intuitive senses connect humans to God effortlessly. For some, it’s through dreams or day-dreaming. For others, it feels more like a sense of “knowing” or a gut-feeling. These senses are the manifestation of remembering that we are like the sun, filled with radiant light. I consider shining like the sun a journey of remembering, and an honor to be a lighthouse (“Lightworker”) for others.

Held in the Palm of His Hand

Sacred Space, the healing, nurturing environment created through the work of hands and intentions, offers the ultimate experience for healing. So often people think of death as an ending to life. However, in my years of practice, I’ve discovered that the experiences we have in this lifetime are the illusion away from Source, away from the Palm of His Hand, and away from the Sacred Space of healing wisdom. In Reiki healing classes, palms become activated with intention, and a laying-on-of-hands ensues. Powerful healing energies that come from the Universe (Source, God, Spirit, etc.) flow through the crown, the heart, and out the palms. In our infancy as spiritual practitioners, we imitate using the Palms of God’s Hands. It’s the greatest complement to God to be more spiritual, for our spirituality increases not only in us, but also in God. As a Reiki Master and practicing, modern, universal shaman, I continuously hold the energy and intention of healing.

The Spiritual Shaman

Awakening is the opportunity to become fully aware of original medicine, accessing the desire to connect to a higher vibration or way of being in the world. Awakening means that the illusion fades as the veil that separates us from Source becomes thinner. The shamans and Lightworkers of the world assist humanity in remembering, connecting humans once again to humanity through healing, going into the darkness, and coming into the light once again. We access the power of All That Is in effortless Grace from the breath of the Divine, the Light of the Sun, and the healing wisdom of the many who’ve come before us.

The power of remembering becomes possible when eagle’s wings carry away the burdens and traumas weighing heavily on the soul. Though grief’s process requires that we remember our pain before we can heal, the breath of dawn reminds us that we are whole, vibrant beings of love and light already.

Choose your path.

Reclaiming Spiritual Power

red rocksThe red rocks of Sedona, Arizona stand as beacons in the high desert, emanating their calm stature as storehouses of power for the ones who seek them. Though I enjoy hiking “up”, I felt it was much more important for me on this visit to stay grounded. Thus, on a recent visit to Bell Rock I made a profound connection that guided me further than I imagined. Here’s a bit of my story of dis-empowerment and reclaiming my power.

Last week I visited a friend in Sedona, AZ with the intention of being with my friend, Lori (Raven’s Call) doing a little hiking around the red rocks, offering a “Healing Pain” workshop, connecting to spirit in profound ways, and receiving a little healing for myself . . . a list full of engaging experiences. As always, I grow from these encounters and come away with a little more than I expected.

sedona agateThe drive up to Sedona from the Phoenix airport became an hour longer than usual due to an accident on the highway ahead of us. However, finally I was delivered safely to my friend who was visiting a sister-friend in a nearby town. I felt instantly at ease and at home with Rebecca who teaches shamanic ways, offers spiritual retreats, and a vision she holds for the future. In fact, I know Rebecca from previous correspondences when I purchased a few beloved crystals from her. This time, I chose a black agate that nearly jumped out at me from a table of other stones. She immediately gifted me the stone as she remarked how just earlier that day she put it out from her personal collection. I felt an instant bond with this stone, and slept with it by my side for several nights as it blessed me with clear dreams.

While in Sedona, I did a healing session for a man who is experiencing an invasion of his personal power through his current illness. Without going into his personal details, we focused on cleansing and, in fact, purging his “stuff”. As I facilitated his healing, we worked together to reclaim his power and see his condition through a new lens. Finally, we felt we were finished and I immediately took the few minutes to cleanse and detach from all energies we encountered. It wasn’t enough for me, and the consequences I felt, though dis-empowering, were also a revelation for more to come.

The feeling of dis-empowerment subtly crept in. One instance after another, the cascade of “mistakes” flooded my field. To a casual observer, it might appear coincidental to have “stuff go wrong”. To an empath like myself, these energies were obviously striking blows to my core. Even after a late, short walk to Bell Rock as the sun sank behind the horizon I didn’t realize what was happening. I went to bed early, feeling drained and awkwardly defeated for no apparent reason. The new stone I adopted refused to be with me as I slept, and elected to keep a short distance instead.

Dreams of ceremony, balance, and rejuvenation crystallized in the night. I awoke early with a “cure” for my personal dis-empowered state. Quickly, I drew a hot bath with Epsom salts, adding frankincense essential oil to coconut oil, and infusing the bath water with it. Next, I filled a tall glass with water, adding my chakra crystal set along with a few drops of frankincense in the glass of water. Completely immersed in the sacred water, I ritually submerged, washed, and anointed myself with blessings. Finally, I drank the water held by the glass, and added the crystals to my bath water. Instantly I felt better for having taken the time, listening to my guides and dreams in order to reclaim my power.

Interestingly, the man for whom I did the healing session is also a powerful healer. He knows that his circumstances can cause such reactions as I experienced and claims I’m not alone for feeling as wiped out as I did. Yet, in a follow up session he had with another healer, he was obviously clearer, and brighter. (He says that “I’m a good healer”. :))

I believe it’s the foundational practices I intuitively have in place that protect me and keep me as strongly empowered as I am. I know when it’s important to ground, and not climb, for example. I’m not only sensitive to crystals and dreams, but I act on the messages I receive. I select which crystals to wear each day, and choose how I feel about my experiences. Sometimes stuff goes “wrong” . . . or does it really? Choosing to be empowered also means that you recognize when you feel dis-empowered. Take the time you need to perform the rituals that help you feel balanced, nurtured, and stronger for having done so.

tipiFinally, as I readied myself to leave Sedona, my friend remarked on our experiences of the week. You see, we built a tipi in her back yard which consumed much of our time and labor. She was almost apologetic for the time it took, but I reminded her how we created Sacred Space. That’s the final lesson for reclaiming your spiritual power. Creating Sacred Space comes first from within – inside your personal practices of cleansing and balancing. Then Sacred Space is supported by the one you create in your environment.

I invite you to recognize your personal power and reclaim it. How do you move in the world? What are the words you choose to speak? How do you feel about money, relationships, and sense of purpose? It all matters. Let me help you find your way. In-person sessions, Reiki classes and Online Courses for Embodied Spirit await you. I’d love to hear from you about your personal power and your journey. Reach out to me. I’m here.

Becoming a Spiritual Athlete

Athleticism – is it more about physical performance or mental acuity?

I never thought of myself as an athlete. Physically I seemed to lack the coordination and strength expected in my school’s program as I was growing up. I may have developed a skewed sense of what it really means to be an athlete. You see, the idea back then was all about physical fitness. President Kennedy’s program to firm up the soft (overweight and unfit) American reached my school, and my uninspired, nerdy image of myself. To me, physical fitness the way the school wanted me to become fit seemed overbearing, hard, regimented (military perhaps?) and not fun.

Today’s athletes know that physical performance is only part of becoming skilled at sports. There’s a spiritual and mental component that makes a great athlete. However, if you’re like me – maybe not so physically adept – you still hone your skills as a Spiritual Athlete.

Yes, I never considered myself an athlete. Somehow those physical skill-related genes missed me. The anxiety I felt for nearly every physical education class in elementary and middle school still haunts me. Well, not really. But I remember how I felt when we had to run, climb ropes, vault, and perform feats of strength and coordination. That wasn’t me. My physical skills were developed through the grace of ballet and dance. I also experienced great joy in riding my bike throughout the country back roads, generally undeveloped and serene with branches of maple and oak arching overhead.

Before I bought my own bike, I used my brother’s old red Schwinn. It was way too big for me and had that high cross bar that boys’ bikes had. It was the bike on which I took my first downhill adventure, when my feet barely reached the pedals. Tilting the bike sideways so I could get on, I straddled the bike tenuously. With one brother at my side keeping me steady, and another behind me pushing, I gained momentum and flew down the long, steep road beside our house. Narrow wheels and low handlebars didn’t provide much comfort, but I didn’t seem to mind – even as I crashed into someone’s yard at the bottom of the hill. I could do fast and straight, but not turns or braking yet. My deep dive into biking was thrilling and scary. I’ll never forget those memories. Though the hill was steep for a little kid with no traditional athletic skills, I can now see it was the perfect experience to launch me at the time.

I recalled these experiences recently when working with a client. Spirituality and athleticism have similarities. Anyone (and everyone) has an innate spiritual connection as well as abilities to move and use the physical body. The quality or depth of either one depends on insight, practice, alignment to your goals, and Grace – the acceptance and refinement of knowledge, virtues, and passion that results in effortless Being. I realized that my first attempts at riding the bike were clumsy at best. I could have given up, or even worse – I could have made my progress conditional on waiting for the “right” bike to come my way. However, the joy of riding outweighed any hesitations and I soon became more adept at turns, braking, and maneuvering (even without “holding on”).

As a spiritual athlete (a.k.a. Lightworker) you’ll be able to do the same. Though you might feel like you’re crashing at first, you’ll become proficient at finding your way through life, practicing skills of discernment, meditation, grounding, and receiving. You’ll have spirit working with you – one at your side to guide you and another for that gentle push to get you off to a good start.

You may tell yourself that the time isn’t right, you have too many obligations, not enough money, or don’t feel strong enough – whatever the reason – waiting for the perfect circumstances doesn’t usually happen. Spiritual growth can be uncomfortable – like when I crashed on my first trip down the hill. Waiting presents its own problems, too. Spiritually speaking, your guides are always beside you, tapping you on the shoulder and giving gentle nudges to help you grow into your greatness. Ignoring guidance could result in harsher physical consequences to get your attention. (That’s another story).

Starting with something that feels “way too big” has its merits. Bigger means you have something to grow into. You’ll have opportunities to discover what you enjoy most, where you want to go, and what you want to do. The first step always feels more difficult than the last. Making the connection, however, feels good – like when a baseball bat connects exactly right with the speed and contact with the ball. The faster I rode my bike, the more balance I had – that’s momentum. Spirituality is like that. The more you practice and integrate spiritual skills into your life, the easier it will become. I call it Effortless Spiritual Awareness.

Becoming a spiritual athlete can help you with every life skill.

You’ll be able to:

  • Make decisions more easily
  • Trust yourself
  • Feel better, stronger, and healthier
  • Develop your creativity
  • Open your heart to giving and receiving love
  • Grant forgiveness
  • Speak your truth
  • Gain insight and sensitivity
  • Connect with Ease and Grace to spirit

As a gift to get you started, I’d like to offer a simple tool – the Chakra Balance Assessment and Integration Tool. It’s free, and it’s a baby step that could give you that gentle nudge toward your life’s purpose. Just fill in the form and I’ll send it to you. Later, when you’re ready for the next step, I’ll be here by your side to help you learn how to become a spiritual athlete. Additional online courses are available now. Chakra Balance Tool

What’s the first thing you do if you begin to lose your balance?

I never liked the feeling of falling, crashing to the sidewalk and experiencing the crunch of bones, joints, and, well, my sense of self. I know you understand what I mean. The truth is, we have too much experience with being off-balance – not just in the physical way of falling, but the emotional and spiritual way, too. Life happens. People (and animals) get sick. Friends move. Jobs change. Crises occur. That’s all part of the journey. But if you’re feeling off-balance for long, you might tend to stay that way. (I see it all too often!)

Hold on. Brace yourself. Prepare for the worst. In that split second before the fall, you reach out, trying to grasp something to support you. If you’re lucky, it works and you avoid the consequences. If you lose your balance and find yourself sitting on an icy sidewalk (as I did a few years ago), you hold on, brace yourself, and reach out for a hand up. What you do next really matters.

I’m the type of person who grabs onto lessons at every opportunity. Though after my second fall (yes, I fell twice in the same spot) I took extra precautions to make sure I wouldn’t fall again. I changed the type of shoes I was wearing to have extra traction, and walked on the other side of the street to avoid icy spots. However, I was sore and really put a lot of effort into self-care with massage and acupuncture, as well as yoga and stretching.

I had the nagging questions of WHY I fell, why it happened in the same place, and what was I supposed to be doing in my life. The fall came as a message from the universe, I felt, that somehow I needed to pay attention to being more balanced – in every way! If you think like that, too, and if a fall isn’t just a fall, then take the opportunity to go a little deeper.

The Chakra Balance Tool

chakra balance tool downloadChakras are energy centers in the body that move and spin. These energy centers are a direct expression of your soul as they manifest into physical form. If you’re feeling weak, injured, upset, stuck, or otherwise deficient in some way, it could be because you’re either blocking energy or leaking energy. Both blocking and leaking energy are often regulated, at least in part, by emotions, events, and perceptions. These topics can fill books. To make it easy, I’ll just skip to the solution.

The Chakra Balance Tool is designed to give you the power to heal yourself. You don’t have to be attuned to Reiki to use the tool and do the exercise, however, using Reiki amplifies the process. If you’re on my list already, you have a direct link to the tool in my newsletter. If not, just subscribe and I’ll be happy to send it to you.

Learn the Benefits of Sound Healing with Tuning Forks

We’re surrounded by sound, and yet, how much of the sound we hear and feel are actually beneficial and, well, HEALING? If you’re plugged in, what are you really plugged into? Chaos and disharmony in the form of sound waves have an effect on the body that interferes with growth, healing, and regeneration of healthy cells and tissues. How do we know which sounds are  disharmonious and which sounds benefit us? In addition, how do sounds HEAL? As a practitioner working with energy healing modalities, becoming attuned to healing frequencies can enhance and accelerate healing for you as well as your clients.

Healing Sounds

My favorite healing frequencies, the solfeggio 6-tone scale, show a mathematical relationship – an expression of harmony with which all living things resonate. Sound is measured in Hertz (Hz). In the table below, see if you can discover the numerical relationships between each of the solfeggio frequencies.

396 Hz – Liberating Guilt and Fear

417 Hz – Undoing Situations and Facilitating Change

528 Hz – Transformation and Miracles (DNA Repair)

639 Hz – Connecting/Relationships

741 Hz – Expression/Solutions

852 Hz – Returning to Spiritual Order

These harmonious frequencies can actually be seen (sound becomes visible) when various substances exposed to these sounds vibrate. The small crystals of salt or sugar, for example, begin to move and form patterns on a flat surface. Dr. Hans Jenny showed in a process he  called cymatics that pure tone vibrations create these beautiful patterns, not only in the lab, but also in nature. We see these patterns everywhere; the arrangement of petals in a flower, waves washing up on shore, the formation of coral reefs in response to whale songs, and many more. Chaotic or non-pure tone sounds elicit no patterns.

We can then relate the reformation of broken bones, the development of muscle tissue, and even the structure of DNA to the possibility that certain sounds heal. Though there’s much more to include in this short article about solfeggio frequencies, cymatics, and healing, I’d like to now suggest that experience is the best teacher. Yet, as we continue to be “plugged in” to electronic devices, we find ourselves not in-tune with the healing sounds of nature. Here’s where we, as healers and practitioners, can make a huge difference for not only ourselves but also for our clients. Bring on the tuning forks!

What are the Benefits of Using Tuning Forks as a Practice?

The Natural Therapies Certification Board offers accreditation for many healing modalities, including sound healing. As a stand-alone healing modality, a practitioner has the option to pursue training as a Vibrational Sound Practitioner with continuing education as a Vibrational Sound Teacher. In some states, CEUs may be accepted in the field of sound healing to apply toward re-licensing of other modalities such as body work. (Check with your licensing board for more information on what they accept for CEUs). Of course there are many benefits beyond certification. Here are a few:

  • Single-tone harmonious frequencies enhance the effectiveness of other healing modalities
  • Effortlessly integrate sound with Reiki, massage, hypnosis, etc.
  • Use as a stand-alone healing modality with superior effectiveness and client results
  • Increases uniqueness in your field
  • Helps raise your personal vibrational levels
  • Helps healing in your own etheric field
  • Helps create a sacred space
  • Supports energetic hygiene
  • Helps balance your inner vortex
  • Releases unseen blocks in the body
  • Heightens intuitive awareness and psychic abilities
  • Experience minimal to no strain on the physical body
  • Easy to learn with effective results
  • Creates a nice sound bath
  • Attunes you to go beyond the physical and energetic limitations of other modalities
  • Helps you work as a shepherd for transformation
  • Offers a unique method for targeted healing work
  • Optimizes wholeness on the physical, emotional and spiritual plains
  • Assists you in working with ease and grace
  • Effortlessly tap into higher realms of consciousness

The Art of Teaching Reiki

Reiki, hands-on and distance healing through the wisdom and training brought to us by Mikao Usui in 1922 has grown into a healing modality available to everyone. Receiving a Reiki attunement is a simple, yet sacred practice through which energy flows from the Divine, through the capable, intentional hands of the Reiki Master, to the willing recipient. In many ways, the process is very simple. Knowing what to do, which Reiki symbols to use, where, how, and when, complete the attunement process.

Is that all there is to doing Reiki?

Not really. The attunement process – becoming attuned to any level of Reiki, including Reiki Master – just opens the door for energy to flow. The next steps involve training and developing sensitivity to the feel of energy as well as intuitive guidance on how to use Reiki. These sensitivities and skills come with practice and mentoring, feedback on technique, and guidance on a vast number of situations new students may encounter.

What’s the difference between Reiki Master and Reiki Master Teacher?

Reiki Master is an intermediate level of training that gives the practitioner three Reiki symbols and the ability to perform Reiki attunements as well as healing, and self-attunements. Becoming attuned as Reiki Master is indeed an important step displaying a practitioner’s commitment to the practice and lifestyle of spiritual healing. Reiki Master is not and end, but rather a new beginning. Newly attuned Reiki Masters move into the world with new confidence and new direction, or sense of purpose. It’s truly wonderful!

Reiki Master Teacher is an art that has been vastly under-valued and overlooked as a necessary part of bringing more competent Reiki students into the world. Why? Learning how to DO Reiki is different from learning how to TEACH Reiki. Teaching involves a different set of skills; ways to demonstrate techniques, writing curriculum to meet the growing need for integrative skills, spiritual mentoring, coaching skills, personal energetic hygiene, and an understanding of the laws surrounding energy healing modalities are all a part of Reiki Master Teaching know-how.
